Prison labour in the supply chain

Edinburgh University’s Fair Trade Coordinator, Liz Cooper, has highlighted the issue of prison labour: what are the conditions of its legitimacy?  She is hoping to stimulate academic debate on the question, which is of practical concern for those responsible for procurement at the university.  Her blog is here.

This is a complex question, and one on which students and researchers in Politics & International Relations may have significant insights to offer, so readers are encouraged to offer comments on the blog and to get in touch with Liz Cooper if interested in contributing at a future event on the question.

On the question of fairness in trade more generally, see also Tim Hayward’s recent article in the latest issue of Leviathan, and also here.
